Many factors affect people's retirement decisions. Social Security clearly plays an important role. Majority of people retire at ages 62 and 65. Greater wealth tends to lead to earlier retirement, since wealthier individuals can essentially "purchase" additional leisure.

The Importance of the Survivorship Decision
There is a substantial financial risk to the retiring federal employee electing the survivorship option, then outliving his or her spouse. Presumably half of all will outlive their spouses, and they will pay the cost of the survivorship option without ever garnering any benefit for doing so. Even though it is impossible to know which spouse will die first, a thoughtful conversation about life expectancies --- though a heavy one --- is very valuable
